BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX/Gray News) — The Mississippi Senate race between Democratic candidate Scott Colom and Republican U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith is still too close to call.

As of Wednesday morning, Colom and Hyde-Smith have both said they are “confident” that they will win.

“Where we are, where the ballots are, we’re gonna win,” Colom said as he addressed supporters at a 10 a.m. news conference. “This is our election. We’ve won it. The people have done it. They’ve decided to go in a new direction. I’m confident of that.”

In a statement, Hyde-Smith’s campaign said, “Our campaign is closely monitoring the remaining count. We remain confident that when every legally cast vote is fully and accurately counted, Mississippians will have reelected Cindy Hyde-Smith.”

As of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, 95.6% of votes had been counted. Colom narrowly leads Hyde-Smith, taking 462,857 (48.9%) of the vote compared to Hyde-Smith’s 462,792 (48.9%) votes. Independent Ty Pinkins has received 19,938 (2.1%) votes.

Because the race is a general congressional race, there will be no runoff, and the top vote-getter will take the seat.

No Democrat has represented Mississippi in the Senate since 1989.
